Installation Procedure:

Remove Right Console Cover from 996

Use a flat head screwdriver to carefully pop out the bottom left corner of the panel your Convertible top switch is in. Pull out toward you a few inches to make room to work.

Unplug Top Switch

Remove connector from Top Switch

Insert AutoTop Between Car and Top Switch

Connect your AutoTop to the switch first.  It should look like this installed.

Speed Sensor Section:

If you have a 2003 or newer 996 you do not need to read the following section, your installation is finished.  If you have a 1998-2002 996, please read the chart to decide what configuration you prefer.  If you do nothing further, your AutoTop will work, but only when the vehicle is stopped.

The vehicle speed signal can be accessed from the radio or the factory convertible top control module behind the rear seats.  They are both the same vehicle speed signal.

Connect AutoTop Blue Wire to Radios Speedometer Input (optional)*

To access the radio speed input:

Remove Left Console Switch Bezel

Remove AC Control Bezel

Remove AC Unit by removing only the TOP two screws and slide the unit out.

Remove Bottom Radio plug.  [This step may vary from Radio to Radio]  The radio will have a diagram on top identifying the Speedometer Input.  Verify the correct wire before proceeding.  On some year / radio combinations the wire is Grey/Brown and is in the bottom Molex.  It is the top/right pin in the Molex if viewed from the front.  Once again this can and will vary, so verify for your self before installing the Blue Wire.

Attach the Blue Wire from the AutoTop to the Speedo trigger wire from the radio. [Grey/Brown on some Porsches]  This can be done two ways.

1.        We recommend stripping the wire back and soldering in the Blue wire to the circuit.

2.        Use the included Tap to spice into the Radios Speedometer Input wire, this is fast and easy, and works just as well. [Remember to verify you are attaching it to the correct wire by checking the schematic on the top of your radio or NAV system]

*Some Porsche radios do not have the speed input for speed variable volume.  This is usually when the car has DSP.  In this case just run the blue wire to the convertible top module located under the rear deck lid and connect it to the factory top control modules grey/Pink wire.

**Connecting this wire will not disable the OEM Safety feature that the convertible top module provides.  Cutting the OEM Speed wire (Grey/Pink) on the factory top module will allow your Convertible Top switch to actuate the top while moving at any speed.

Disabling your OEM speed sensor 1998-2002 996 Cab ONLY

  1. Park car, motor off, ignition on.  Set e-Brake.  Put top down.
  2. Actuate top up and wait until the convertible top compartment lid lifts and moves all the way to the rear of the vehicle.  Then stop the top.
  3. Unclip the two black cables that keep the rear of the convertible top [window area] from moving up.  These clips just snap off where they connect to the body of the car.
  4. Lift the window section of the convertible top to 90 deg [pointing at the sky] and have someone hold it there.
  5. Remove plastic cover to relay panel.  This panel is held in place by 4x plastic rivets.
  6. The top module is the silver box on the left side mounted vertically under the roll bar.  The top module has three wiring harnesses plugging into it.
  7. Locate the left most connector with the small gauge wires.
  8. Locate the Grey/Pink wire and cut it.  This wire carries the Speed signal into the convertible module.  On 1998-2002 996 Cabs this wire prevents operation of the top while the vehicle is in motion.  You do not need to cut this wire on 2003 or newer 996 cabs.
  9. Tape both sides of the cut wire.
  10. If you want AutoTop to monitor your vehicle speed to limit top actuation to speeds below 25mph, you can connect the AutoTop-Blue wire to the car side of the Grey/Pink wire.  It is usually more convenient to connect the blue wire to the back of the radio.
  11. Assembly is the reverse of this procedure.

Reconnect Car Battery and test AutoTop

Your Finished!

·         This switch works like your power windows.  A quick press starts the top in motion, a press of 200ms or longer only moves the top while the button is being pressed.  Make sure you use a “quick press”.

**BahnTech is not responsible for Damage done while operating your top with your car in motion, or for any other reason.  AutoTop just automates the convertible top switch, so any damage that can be caused by using the switch manually can be caused by automating the switch operation
